Rory McIlroy is ‘looking forward to a new beginning’ with his wife after the couple called off their divorce proceedings.

The golfer, who is currently preparing for the US Open at Pinehurst in North Carolina, last night confirmed that the proceedings launched in a Florida court last month have been voluntarily dismissed.

In a statement to the Guardian, the four-time major winner hit out at ‘rumours’ surrounding his personal life – and said that he and his wife Erica Stoll had decided that “our best future was as a family together”.

“There have been rumours about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate,” he said. “Responding to each rumour is a fool’s game.

“Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realised that our best future was as a family together. Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”

Divorce

McIlroy filed for divorce in a Florida court on Tuesday May 13th – with a statement from his representatives confirming the news soon after.

The statement stressed the golfer’s desire to “ensure this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible”.

Majors

McIlroy arrives at the US Open seeking to end his decade-long wait for a fifth major title.

In his statement to the Guardian, he stressed that he is “really proud of my body of work over the past 15 years and everything that I have achieved”.

“Obviously, getting my hands on a fifth major has taken quite a while but I’m more confident than ever that I’m right there; that I’m as close as I’ve ever been,” he said.

McIlroy will partner Masters champion Scottie Scheffler and PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele in rounds one and two of the tournament.

They will tee off at 6:14pm Irish time on Thursday.
