The government is set to hold the by-election to fill the seat vacated by former Junior Minister Shane McEntee on the week before Easter. The most likely date is March 27th.

Fine Gael has yet to choose a candidate. However the daughter of Mr. McEntee - Helen - is expected to be selected by the party.

The decision to hold the by-election as made by the Cabinet at their weekly meeting today. With the election set to be held on Wednesday March 27th the count will probably take place on Holy Thursday.

Fianna Fail has selected Thomas Byrne as their candidate. While Sinn Fein will run Darren O'Rourke.
