The International Automobile Federation FIA has approved Skoda’s new rally car, the Fabia R 5. Skoda, who has partaken in motorsport for the last 114 years, is hoping that the new Fabia R 5 will be as successful as its predecessor, the Fabia 2000.

The Fabia R 5 houses a 1.6litre turbo engine with new four-wheel drive. The car weighs circa 1,230kg and has a five-speed sequential gearbox. We’re told that it took 15 months and 10,000km of testing to fine-tune this car to ensure that the components interact perfectly with each other.

The R 5 has a lot to live up to after the broad successes of the Fabia 2000 after it “completed a hat-trick of titles in the Driver’s and Manufacturer championships in the FIA Asia-Pacific Rally Championship (APRC), while the champion in the FIA European Rally Championship (ERC) was a ŠKODA works driver for the third time in a row. The list of success achieved last year also includes five national titles. With a total of almost 50 international and national titles in six years, the ŠKODA Fabia Super 2000, which made its first appearance in 2009, is the most successful project in the company's 114-year motorsport history."
