A member of the Kinahan cartel has been jailed for nine years after armed gardaí caught him with a loaded gun in a cabin at the back of a house in Dublin.
Trevor Byrne, of Cappagh Road, Finglas, Dublin 11, also had just over €3,000 in his pocket when the house was raided on November 15th last year.
He claimed he only had the gun because there was a threat on his life at the time, but gardaí believed it was to be used in a gangland hit.
Detective Chief Superintendent Angela Willis made a brief statement outside court following today’s sentencing.
She said: "Today's convictions for possession of firearms demonstrates our determination to pursue and prosecute those who are willing to use firearms.
"We will continue to work together, both nationally and internationally, and do all on our part to tackle organised crime... ensuring we can keep our communities safe.
"I wish to acknowledge the professionalism and the dedication of all of the members involved in achieving this outcome today."
