A memorial service will be held in Co. Carlow today for all four women who died in a road crash near Athy in Co. Kildare on Tuesday.

The service will be held at the Cathedral in Carlow town at 12.15pm. Their funerals will take place in Carlow and Kildare in the coming days.

The women were named yesterday as 19 year old Ashling Middleton, 20 year old Chermain Carroll, and 19 year olds Gemma Nolan and Niamh Doyle.

It's understood the women who died were college friends on their way back to university after the Christmas holidays, when their car collided with a van at Burtown, around 3 miles from Junction 3 on the M9.

Another woman in the car and two men travelling in the van were seriously hurt in the crash.

They were treated at the scene before being rushed to Naas General Hospital.
