Fine Gael MEP Jim Higgins says more protection should be available to members of an Garda Siochana whose families are being targetted by criminals.
He made the remarks after Regina Sweeney - the wife of a detective in Mayo - was attacked in her home, just outside Castlebar yesterday evening, for the third time in less then six months.
The 36-year-old is now recovering in hospital.
