The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) is being slammed for not doing enough to protect players who are gay.
It follows an admission at the weekend by Cork hurler Donal Og Cusack that he was verbally abused during matches.
The inter-county player says people with megaphones were shouting homophobic and slanderous insults at him while he was playing.
Labour MEP for Munster Phil Prendergast has today criticized the GAA for not doing enough to protect and encourage its LGBT players and members.
“If the GAA truly is an all-community organisation, it needs to start examining the possibility of adopting soccer-style laws to combat hooliganism, such as the use of CCTV and police intelligence to identify these individuals, stadium bans and potentially criminal sanctions for those that engage in this destructive and offensive behaviour” she said.
She says it was strange that the GAA allowed this to continue.
She has told Cork’s RedFM the organisation needs to tackle the issue.
