Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice is to start a new political party.
It is believed the Roscommon-South Leitrim TD plans on running 25 candidates in the next election.
The government are mandated to go to the people in April 2016 - but there is speculation that one could be called as early as next year.
The rise in support for independents means Mr Fitzmaurice's new group could pose a threat to the larger parties.
TDs Lucinda Creighton and Shane Ross are both also thought to be considering setting up their own political groups.
Last month, Mr Fitzmaurice attended a meeting of community activists in Mayo who asked him to mentor them in order to elect an Independent TD.
The move has reportedly unnerved supporters of Taoiseach Enda Kenny.
Mr Fitzmaurice says his new party would not be left or right wing - but "down the middle".
He also says that he is uncertain as of yet whether it will be a full party, or an alliance of several others.
He told Newstalk.com that he hopes everyone will have a say.
