The Tánaiste has launched legal action against Google.
It is in relation to the use of Micheál Martin's name and image in online adverts promoting financial products.
The Tánaiste filed the High Court action against Google Ireland Limited yesterday.
A spokesperson for Fianna Fáil said Minister Martin believes it is neither acceptable nor tolerable that unknown persons can use his image and name online in an effort to associate him with financial products.
They said he had never heard of these products and claimed those involved are trying to extract money from people using his name.
The Foreign Affairs Minister has already sought information from Google in an effort to understand and identify who is responsible for these advertisements carried on "respectable websites."
The spokesperson added that as Google was not in a position to hand over information without a court order, Minister Martin was left with no option but to pursue the matter through the courts.
It is understood the case could be heard later this week.
