A series of coordinated attacks in Paris tonight, near the Stade de France, have claimed the lives of at least 39 people in an ongoing situation.
Tributes have since come in from leaders around the world, with US President Barack Obama calling it "an attack on all of humanity and the universal values we share".
However, Mick Wallace and Clare Daly both turned to Twitter to question the role of France in "the militarisation of the planet".
So terrible for the victims, but when is France going to stop it's role in the militarisation of the planet? https://t.co/jjymbD2w0k

Tragedy beyond belief...everyone's thoughts with victims but it's always the right time to ask why or it will go on. https://t.co/G4UGC2wZY5

The timing and nature of the comments lead to a huge backlash online from social media users.
@wallacemick Jesus Christ. Seriously?

@wallacemick Seriously?!? You decided this was an appropriate tweet on hearing the news??

@wallacemick Mick, this is incredibly crass. Death toll appears to be rising. Not the time to make a political football out of horror! Awful

@wallacemick For crying out loud Deputy Wallace. This is NOT the time.
