A Minecraft user has recreated Limerick City as part of a project he began in Transition Year.
Minecraft is a 3-D computer game that some have described as akin to ‘online lego’.
Mateusz Bartnik is now in sixth year and has dedicated a lot of time to building up a virtual version of Limerick.
“We try and make this project as simple as possible for people to join,” he told Moncreiff.
“We have a website and from there, people can visit our server where the project is led from and from there you can visit the microserver to visit anywhere in Ireland that you like - normally Limerick.
“There, you have the opportunity to see for yourself the country.”
Mateusz has no formal training in coding and believes Minecraft is easy to get involved in.
“You need absolutely no experience at computing or programming for this,” he said.
Much of the virtual building has been done using Google Maps street view in order to be as accurate as possible.
“It’s on a one-to-one scale,” he said.
“So, you can picture yourself there in the game; you can look up and see St. John’s Cathedral or whatever it is… You can go anywhere really.
“The project is about recreating Ireland - the entire country - on a one-to-one scale in Minecraft.”
Thus far Mateusz and his collaborators have recreated 0.03% of Ireland on Minecraft.
