The new environment minister has agreed to restore funding to organisations which lost out under the Scheme to Support National Organisations (SSNO).

30 disability organisations will have funding restored for a 12 month period.

Many of the groups were previously funded under the SSNO.

They would have faced a sudden financial loss, with some threatened with closure. Minister Alan Kelly is understood to have signed off on the restoration of funding a short time ago.

The organisations saw their funding  revoked on June 30th.

Several groups - including the Disability Federation of Ireland - had been calling for the monies to be reinstated.

The funding is being made available to the majority of organisations who were unsuccessful in applications under the scheme but had received funding previously from it up to June 30th and submitted a valid application in 2014.

The Minister says he is making the funding available "to avoid a sudden and adverse impact on these organisations".

The funding for each organisation will be restored based on their allocation so far this year.

Minister Kelly said "While I am restoring the funding to these organisations for a twelve month period, it is essential that, that time is used to find a more long-term sustainable solution to the funding problems of these organisations".

"In all, 30 organisations will have their funding restored until July of next year and the services and advocacy they provide should continue for that period".

This additional funding will amount to €1.28 million for the 12 month period to end June 2015.
