The Minister for Justice Alan Shatter has said it's "absolutely appropriate and right" that the bravery of Brian Stack is remembered.
The former chief prison officer at Portlaoise Prison died 18 months after being shot outside the National Stadium in Dublin on March 25th 1983.
Alan Shatter presented his widow, Sheila Stack, with a posthumous medal today to pay tribute to his service.
A bronze bust has also been erected in his memory, while the Prison Training Centre in Portlaoise has been renamed Brian Stack House.
No one has ever been convicted of the attack.
But Minister Shatter has told Midlands 103 that he's hopeful progress will be made in the investigation:
