Clare has mixed views about former US President and local businessman Donald Trump, TD Cathal Crowe has said.

Mr Trump is due to arrive in the county today and will visit Trump International Golf Links & Hotel Doonbeg - which he owns.

“You’d see a lot of positivity in terms of his business acumen and his investment,” Deputy Crowe told Newstalk.

“[However], most people in Clare are following the news daily, as they listen to stories unfolding and I think a lot of people would not be the greatest fan of his political career and some of the happenings in that regard.”

While in Europe, Mr Trump has also found time to visit two golf courses he owns in Scotland; Mr Trump’s mother, Mary Trump, was a native Gaelic speaker from the Outer Hebrides and he enthused: "It's great to be home, this was the home of my mother."

Mr Trump has been charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records during the 2016 US Presidential election.

Prosecutors allege he slept with porn star Stormy Daniels in 2004 and paid her hush money during the campaign in exchange for her silence.

Mr Trump denies all charges; he has announced his intention to stand for the Republican nomination in 2024.
