New figures show 22,170 Irish people have settled in Australia since 2009.

Recent figures from the Settlement Report of the Australian government show Irish emigrants have permanently settled in Australia since the beginning of the recession - with Ireland now featuring at 11 in the list of top 25 countries that have officially migrated there.

The figures show that 22,170 people born in Ireland have permanently settled in Australia from October 1st 2009 to the September 30th 2014.

Of these, 17,439 are categorised as skilled people, while a further 4,731 Irish people say they settled in Australia for family reasons.

However the register does not reflect settlers who may have died or who have had their grants cancelled.

The report also says that it contains some duplicate records.

The top nationalities going to Australia are India (173,867), China (162,069), the UK (100,298) and the Philippines (62,457).
