Fourteen councils have revised down their property tax rates for next year, which will save more than one million homeowners a total of €45m.

Six councils have chosen to reduce the tax by the maximum of 15%, including Dublin City Council, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown, Fingal, South Dublin, Clare and Wicklow county councils.

The other eight local authorities reduced the property tax by 10% or lower.

New figures from Revenue show 94% of homeowners paid the tax this year - down from 95% in 2013.

There were also 400 referrals to the sheriff to collect the tax after non-payment this year.

Revenue local property tax project manager is Vivienne Dempsey.

She says anyone whose council has lowered their rate does not need to take any action.
