Prosecutors are this morning expected to decide whether to move forward with charges against Lisa Smith.

The Dundalk woman’s period of detention officially ends at 10:30am this morning.

She has been in custody since her arrest on suspicion of terror offences on Sunday; and prosecutors must now decide whether to charge or release her.

Ms Smith travelled to Syria three years ago to join the so-called Islamic State group, but continues to maintain that she wasn’t involved in fighting.

The Government has survived a motion of no confidence in the Housing Minister, avoiding a Christmas election.

The Social Democrats had called for Minister Eoghan Murphy’s removal from office over his handling of the housing crisis.

The motion was defeated 56 votes to 53 after a lengthy debate last night.

Independent TDs Noel Grealish, Michael Lowry and Denis Naughten voted with the government.

Patient advocate Lorraine Walsh has resigned from the CervicalCheck steering committee set up to oversee changes in the programme.

Ms Walsh said she was stepping down because she does not have confidence in the report from the UK Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists published yesterday.

The report found original test results carried out on the slides of 308 women with cancer were wrong.

Of those, 159 also had missed opportunities for diagnosis.

The 221+ group has warned that there are a number of questions that need answering.

A former British paratrooper accused of two murders on Bloody Sunday in 1972 is due in court in Derry later.

"Soldier F" also faces five attempted murder charges over shootings during a civil rights demonstration.

The case was adjourned a number of months ago so evidence against the accused could be considered.

Ireland's biggest hospital has come under fire for offering staff cash prizes to discharge patients faster.

St James's Hospital displayed posters with the slogan 'the battle is on' as part of a competition to have patients cleared for discharge moved on before 11am.

The competition was due to run for four months from October to January.

The cash prizes on offer were to be used for ward resources.
