Brexit talks will enter an “intense” stage this weekend following new proposals aimed at breaking the deadlock over the backstop.

The proposals put forward by Boris Johnson during a meeting with Leo Varadkar in Cheshire last week are being kept tightly under wraps while the talks continue.

It is believed the complicated proposals involve the North leaving the EU Customs Union but continuing to follow EU regulations and remaining subject to EU tariffs.

Japan is bracing itself for one of the most powerful storms in decades.

Typhoon Hagibis is expected to make landfall in the Greater Tokyo Area this morning.

It reached wind speeds of 177kph yesterday and is expected to bring torrential rains to the area.

It has forced the cancellation of a number of Rugby World Cup matches; however, Ireland's game against Samoa later is going ahead.

A 67-year-old man's due in court this morning after being extradited to the North on foot of a European Arrest Warrant.

It was issued by the PSNI, which is investigating the murder of two Ulster Defence Regiment (UDR) Soldiers in 1972.

Gardaí arrested him yesterday.

He will appear before Omagh Magistrates Court later this morning.

More than 100,000 people have fled their homes in northern Syria as Turkey continues its bombardment of the area.

International aid agencies say the invasion, which began after US president Donald Trump pulled troops from the region, could lead to a humanitarian crisis.

The US has insisted it has not abandoned its Kurdish allies in the face of the invasion, noting that it has asked Turkey to stop the violence.

President Trump is threatening "powerful new sanctions" if Ankara continues its offensive into the region.

Nearly 200 people's estates have gone to the State since 2015 because they didn't leave a will and no relative could be found.

More than €1.6m ended up with the Department of Finance as a result.

134 of the estates amounted to less than €1,000.

But five came to more than €100,000 – the highest valued at €361,000.
