A major new report is warning that the number of cancer cases in Ireland could double by 2045.
The National Cancer Registry has found that when all cancers excluding non-melanoma skin cancer are combined, there could be a 111% increases for men and an 80% increase for women.
It said the increase could be a “more modest” 50% for both genders, if “recent trends, including declines” continue.
The Irish Cancer Society has called for urgent Government investment to future-proof Ireland’s cancer services – warning that they are already “buckling” under current demand.

The British Prime Minister is due to hold last minute Brexit talks with the leaders of France and Germany today.
Theresa May will meet Angela Merkel and Emanuel Macron in Berlin and Paris ahead of Wednesday’s emergency summit of EU leaders.
She will use the meetings to set out her case for a Brexit extension until June 30th.
It comes as talks between the UK Conservative and Labour parties aimed at finding a compromise way forward broke up without agreement last night.

The Cabinet will today discuss plans for the regulation of private security firms carrying out High Court orders.
The Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan will outline plans to require firms to be regulated by the Private Security Authority – with increased training and licencing.
The Government launched a review of security firm regulation after protesters were removed from a vacant house in Dublin's North Frederick Street by men wearing balaclavas last year.
At the time, the security services were accused of using heavy handed tactics.

The country’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is seeking a record fifth term in office.
His right-wing Likud party is locked in a tight race with centrist rival Benny Gantz - who heads the Blue and White party.
Official results will arrive tomorrow - but it could take weeks for politicians to agree a coalition government.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses after a man in his 20s died in a crash in County Waterford yesterday evening.
He was pronounced dead at the scene after the car he was driving hit a wall near O'Keeffe's Cross, Dunhill at around 6pm.
He was the only person in the car.
Investigators are calling for anyone with information to contact Tramore Garda Station on 051-391620.
