Morning top 5: Fine Gael to continue talks with Independents; weekend strike by Luas drivers to go ahead

Micheál Martin says he will talk to Enda Kenny again next week, after the Dáil makes another attempt to elect a Taoiseach.

However, Fine Gael says their leader wanted to meet Mr Martin again today - after the two spoke on the phone yesterday.

Fine Gael's continuing talks with a group of 15 Independents, while Fianna Fáil has started to speak to a number of others.

Barack Obama's pledged to work with China to prevent North Korea from developing nuclear weapons.

World leaders at a global security summit in Washington DC, are also looking at how to prevent terrorists from trying to develop a nuclear bomb to kill as many people as possible.

The US president says they stand together against any potential nuclear threats from North Korea.

Ireland is set to become the most obese country in Europe within a decade.

Irish men already have the highest body mass index, while Irish women rank third.

Research published in the Lancet suggests that within nine years, one in five adults worldwide will be obese.

The research shows that more people on the planet are now obese than underweight.

This weekend's strike action by Luas drivers will go ahead.

In the latest stoppage by drivers - in a row over pay - trams will not run on Saturday or Sunday.

In a statement yesterday the CEO of Transdev UK and Ireland, Nigel Stevens, said current demands are 'totally unaffordable and will not be countenanced'.

Drivers had been looking for a pay-rise of up to 53%, and last week rejected a pay offer of between 8% and 18% over 33 months.

90 people have been rescued from a collapsed flyover in India, where at least 23 people have been killed.

Rescuers have worked through the night with saws, cranes and even their bare hands to dig through the wreckage in Kolkata.

Many of those rescued are thought to have serious injuries.
