A clearer picture will be known later on how rapidly COVID-19 is spreading across the country.

Fresh modelling is to be released by the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET), which will assess how the virus is reproducing and the impact of the current restrictions in place.

The death toll from the coronavirus has risen to 769, after 49 more people with the virus died, while the number of confirmed cases stands at 16,671.

The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar will be among those attending the European Council meeting.

Leo Varadkar has said a cap on rents and a ban on evictions may be extended beyond the end of June.

The measures were put in place in response to the coronavirus crisis a number of weeks ago.

But housing charity Threshold says they should be extended as people will be in financial difficulty all through the summer.

The Ombudsman says some direct provision centres are housing three or more residents from different families in a single room, despite COVID-19 concerns.

In his annual commentary, Peter Tyndall describes the situation as "inappropriate" and has called for it to be urgently looked at.

His office received 168 complaints from residents of direct provision centres in 2019 - a 10.5% increase on the previous year.

A new report has shown there is not enough emphasis on building housing for lower and middle income families.

Initiative Ireland authored the study which says COVID-19 is expected to impact the delivery of one in five new homes with 20,000 units to be completed.

The research has also found that households earning less than €65,000 a year could only access 4% of homes listed for sale in Dublin.
