Morning top 5: Total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Republic passes 10,000

Nearly a thousand positive tests for coronavirus were reported last night, bringing the total number of cases in the Republic to 10,647.

An additional 992 cases were confirmed by the Department of Health - 527 new confirmed cases from Irish labs and a further 465 confirmed by German labs.

31 more patients have died in the Republic, bringing the total number of deaths to 365.

Health officials say the area of greatest concern is now the number of cases in residential institutions.

167 deaths have been confirmed among COVID-19 patients in nursing homes.

HSE chief clinical officer Colm Henry yesterday evening said expert doctors and more resources are being sent to help management in nursing homes.

The HSE has apologised to "less than 100" people wrongly told they'd tested negative for COVID-19.

Texts were sent to a number of people telling them the coronavirus had not been found in their swab.

However, it has emerged their results had actually been sent for review and later tested 'weakly positive'.

The Teachers Union of Ireland says it will be working with the State Examinations Commission to help vulnerable Leaving Cert students.

The union says those with underlying health issues and special education needs must not have their prospects further damaged by the coronavirus crisis.

Leaving Cert exams have been postponed until late July or early August, while Junior Cycle exams will be replaced with school-based exams in the new school year.

The Housing Minister says steps to support local authority mortgage borrowers impacted by the coronavirus crisis have been agreed.

Eoghan Murphy says it will ensure a mortgage payment break of up to three months will be made available to those who need it.

He has pledged no additional costs for borrowers who avail of the break, and says a simplified application process will be introduced for those who wish to apply for a break.
