Morning top 5: Total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Republic reaches 9,655

The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the Republic has reached 9,655.

Latest figures show 430 new cases of COVID-19 reported by Irish laboratories, while another 297 cases have been reported by a lab in Germany

14 more people have also died after being diagnosed with COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths in the Republic to 334.

Health Minister Simon Harris has said he is conscious that our country is making progress during the coronavirus crisis.

In his Easter message, Simon Harris says we're slowing down the number of people being infected.

However, he said he is also aware that the challenges people face in not seeing family members for now is "utterly insignificant compared to the families today in our country who are grieving their loved ones".

The Association of Secondary Teachers (ASTI) has told its members "no teacher will be required to do anything" when it comes to work for the rescheduled Leaving Cert.

State examinations have been pushed back from it's usual start date to either late July or early August.

However, the teaching union says teachers will not be forced to prepare students ahead of the rescheduled exams - noting it has a number of concerns and needs clarification from the Department of Education.

Spain is preparing to lift some of its lockdown restrictions, after a drop in the number of confirmed coronavirus cases.

Strict measures have been in place in the country since March 14, but only certain non-essential industries will now be allowed to operate again.

Those who are going back to work must maintain social distancing, while masks will be worn on public transport.

Ferry passenger numbers are down over 17% at Dublin Port in the first three months of the year compared with 2019.

Figures show the number of tourists passing through has also fallen by 18%.

Meanwhile, overall the number of goods passing through in the first quarter is down almost 5%.
