British search and rescue expert Mark Scorer said there's an urgency to find survivors.

“The first few days and hours are critical,” he said.

“The authorities in Morocco will do everything they can to mobilise their trams in what will be challenging conditions in potentially remote mountainous locations to search villages and look for life.”

Irish citizens in affected areas are being advised to follow “local safety instructions” and keep listening to local media.

Tánaiste Micheál Martin says he's shocked to learn of the devastating fatalities.

"Our thoughts are with those who lost loved ones, the injured, and brave first responders,” he said.

“Ireland stands in solidarity with the people of Morocco.”

President Michael D Higgins has also expressed his “deepest sympathy” to the King and people of Morocco.

US President Joe Biden also said he is “deeply saddened by the loss of life”.

“My administration is in contact with Moroccan officials,” he said.

“We are working expeditiously to ensure American citizens in Morocco are safe and stand ready to provide any necessary assistance for the Moroccan people.”

From Marrakesh, journalist Rida Fakhar said the ancient part of the city has been worst hit.

"We’ve seen the top of buildings fall down in the main square,” he said.

“We have seen so many houses fall down.”
