Pope Francis has announced Mother Teresa of Calcutta, the nun who dedicated her life to helping the poor, will be made a saint at a ceremony on September 4th.

The Nobel peace laureate died in 1997 aged 87.

She was head of Missionaries of Charity.

It comes after the Pope approved a decree recognising a miracle carried out by Mother Teresa.

It is claimed she healed a man suffering from multiple brain tumours.

Pope John Paul II beatified her in 2003, which is the step before sainthood. Canonisation requires one more miracle after beatification.

Known as the "saint of the gutters", she was renowned for her work with the poor in Calcutta.
