The mother of an 10-month-old baby boy with a brain tumour who died at Temple Street Children's Hospital says she has been failed by the health service.

Kate Costello of Domville Woods, Santry in Dublin has received damages from the Health Service Executive and an apology from the hospital arising from the death of her son Kaidan died on July 11th 2009.

Kaidan was born in good health in September 2008 but by the following April he began refusing food and failing to thrive.

He was admitted to Temple Street Children's Hospital on 2 occasions that month but it was not until an MRI scan was carried out in June that he was diagnosed as having a brain tumour.

He suffered a catastrophic brain injury in the course of an operation to remove the tumour and died 3 days later on July 11th. 3 experts agreed that baby Kaidan should have been treated with chemotherapy.

The HSE has admitted liability for the death and Temple Street Hospital has offered its sincere apologies. It says it recognises that an apology and compensation cannot negate the family's continuing heartache.

Kaidan's mother Kate Costello spoke after the HSE agreed to a €180,000 settlement for their trauma.
