Motorists are advised to drive with care after Met Eireann issued a snow-ice warning across the country.

The weather forecaster is advising of wintry showers across Ulster, leading to accumulations of snow on hills and mountains.

Met Eireann advises it will be "cold, frosty and icy overnight with clear periods and occasional wintry showers of hail, sleet and snow, most especially in parts of the midlands, west and north early in the night becoming more scattered later."

Lowest temperatures will be -2 to +1 degrees Celsius.

Wintry showers can also be expected in Connacht and West Munster, extending eastwards in to Leinster by later tonight.

However, the snowfall will not be as heavy as earlier in the week.

Meanwhile, any motorists taking to the roads tonight are advised to take care.

Brian Farrell from the RSA says black ice is one of the biggest threats.

“One of the main problems we’re going to be facing out there is maintaining traction on the roads. The danger of ice and black ice is something we have to contend with,” Mr Farrell said.

“In other parts of the country where we don’t have snow I think the danger is black ice and because the danger isn’t obvious to us we could be lulled into a false sense of security so particularly off national routes we’ve got to be on the lookout,” he added.
