An Independent TD has urged Labour, Social Democrats and the Greens to make clear their stances on government formations talks quickly.

Two separate groups of Independent TDs met with Fianna Fail and Fine Gael negotiators today, following the publication of the framework document last week.

One group - consisting of deputies Marian Harkin, Michael Fitzmaurice and Michael McNamara - have agreed to meet Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil again.

Meanwhile, Denis Naughten from the Regional Group of Independents says the two large parties must get clarity from the smaller parties on what their intentions are in relation to talks.

Deputy Naughten told The Hard Shoulder it wouldn't be acceptable to have the government formation process dragged out over the coming weeks and months.

He said: "We want to see a clear timeline - we're not happy that this issue has been dragged out now for 10, going into 11, weeks.

"We believe that very quickly the bones of a programme for government could be put in place.

"But we need people to get on the train or decide they're not going to get on the train - and we believe the two big parties now need to get clarity from the three smaller parties."

Deputy Naughten said the eight independent members of his own group are "directly engaging as a group of eight" with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael.

However, individuals would be able to decide to what degree they wish to participate if any agreement is reached.

He said his group wants to see issues such as balanced regional development and support for SMEs addressed in any programme of government.

He stressed that the group is prepared to 'roll up their sleeves' and actively engage in any such programme.
