On today's Hard Shoulder, Kieran threw out a very specific request to listeners - a recommendation for a new TV show.
He and his wife have just finished the "absolutely brilliant" Little Fires Everywhere, and now they're looking for something new to watch.
There were two caveats - 1) he was looking for something reasonably short and quick to get into; and 2) he was looking for something that wasn't Schitt's Creek (which he has tried and given up on... "it's brutal").
Here are some of the shows listeners recommended (with some of their comments attached):
Schitt's Creek (Netflix)
Yes, despite Kieran's request, this is still a popular recommendation. As one listener wrote:
"It isn't obvious humour so can understand why if you are looking to disengage the brain and be entertained why it might seem like "dirge". Give it a chance and you might enjoy. This little oasis in the world far away from the "phobias" of the world. The town of Schitt's Creek is inclusive to the LGBTQ community. It is rare where sexuality and sexual orientation while being a characteristic of a person is not tumultuous plotline. Instead, in this tiny Canadian town, it is acknowledged and celebrated."
Benidorm (Netflix)
"Each series differ slightly. Seven episodes in each series. Easy watching and absolutely hilarious."
The Americans (Amazon Prime)
"Really good spy drama"... six seasons long, but "worth it".
The Duchess (Netflix)
"The Duchess with Katherine Ryan (and Rory Keenan) is a brilliantly funny story about a single mom in London with an ex-husband who was in a now finished boy band. Fabulously rude and irreverent - and short."
Caliphate (Netflix)
"It is fantastic! Edge of seat, heart wrenching! So frightening. One season , 8 episodes."
The Boys (Amazon Prime)
"Absolutely amazing... definitely worth a watch."
Succession (Sky / Now TV)
"Best series I've seen in a long time... just finished it and I'm now I'm in your predicament."
Taboo (Sky)
"With Tom Hardy. Outstanding."
The Comey Rule (Sky / Now TV)
"Very much of the minute... horrifically a true story."
