While the Irish are renowned  for loving their  potatoes, many feel still that not enough recognition is given to the humble spud.
However href="http://www.potato.ie/national-potato-day/">potato.ie have decided to fix this, with a day  held in the spuds honour. The National Potato Day which will be launching this Saturday August 25th, aims to promote the nutritional values behind the potato itself  as well introducing many to the famous root vegetable.
While enticing people to give the spud a go with various potato recipes, they also aim give interesting fun facts you never knew about the potato.
That potatoes contain less fat than pasta and rice, more Vitamin C than a Orange, more fibre than an apple and more potassium than a banana.
When it comes to potato types in Ireland it seems that the rooster is the most popular. Even though potato is renowned with the countryside, when comes to the regional potato popularity, it is in fact north central Dublin where potato lovers eat the most.
The National Potato Day may aim to introduce the Irish palette to new potato induced recipes but when it comes to potato dishes gratin with some cheese  or simple butter melted on top is still a firm Irish favourite.
