20 teams of young engineers will be competing in Dublin this weekend, hoping to be crowned Ireland’s 2020 Lego League champions.

The league encourages teams of students aged between 10 and 16 to explore a given topic by designing, building and programming an "autonomous LEGO robot to solve a series of missions".

The winners will go on to represent Ireland at the league's world final in the US.

Sixth class students at Wicklow Montessori Primary School will be among those taking part in the competition.

Teacher Aideen Bush told Newstalk Breakfast the students involved have been working very hard on their project since returning to school in September.

She said: "There have been a lot of early mornings, late evenings and weekends.

"They haven't complained about the amount of work they have to put in, and they really just get on with it - they really enjoy doing it.

"It's hard work as well, and I know especially around this time they're tired because they've been working so hard and been in school for long hours... but they've really been a pleasure to work with."

She said the project is a great educational opportunity, allowing teachers to "tie in all aspects of the curriculum".

12-year-old James McCann is one of the school's students taking part in the project.

He has focused on areas such as research and designing the team's logo and t-shirt.

A number of his teammates are the ones who will be operating the robot itself.

James explained: "There's seven of us - every year sixth class does it.

"I think we're all nervous, but we're all very excited: we're all very happy that we've got to this stage in the competition, and we've already passed the regionals."
