New cameras to catch drivers who break red lights at Luas junctions in Dublin are reported to be on the way. A trial of the system has been in place at some points in the capital - particularly on the Red Line, which crosses more streets.

According to The Irish Times, any footage of motorists breaking lights will then be assessed by the gardaí to see if penalty points should be imposed.

The Department of Transport say the scheme will go city-wide by the end of the year after a trial of the system at some crossings in Dublin.

Two cameras were put around the north inner-city along the north quays at various points.

Breaking a red light could earn a driver two penalty points on payment of the fixed charge notice, or five on conviction. An €80 fine is also levied, which goes up to €120 if its not paid within 28 days.

It is hoped the new system will result in fewer collisions.

Political Correspondent with the Irish Times Fiach Kelly explains how motorists will be punished.

"The images from the cameras will be fed back to the gardai, who'll then be able to enforce penalty points on any drivers caught" he said.

"So even if you break the red light, keep going and think you've gotten away with it, the camera will take a picture of your car, feed it back to the guards and you'll get a fine and 2 penalty points" he added.
