A new set of €100 and €200 banknotes has been brought into circulation across the Euro area today.
The notes carry “new and upgraded security features” to combat forgery – including a satellite hologram and an enhanced emerald number.
The hologram shows small Euro symbols moving around the denomination when you tilt the note and hold it under direct light.
Meanwhile, there are now Euro symbols included in the emerald number at the bottom left of the note.
You can discover the notes in 3D and see the holograms in action here.
The notes are now the same height as the €50 note making them easier for machines to process and subject to less wear and tear in people’s wallets.
The European Central Bank said the demand for €100 banknotes is increasing at an annual rate of 7.6%. It is more widely used than either the €5 or €10 note.
Demand for the €200 note is increasing at a rate of 8.6% per year.
