Although they're launching in a number of international territories this week, Irish customers will have to wait a while longer to get their hands on the new iPhone 5c and 5s models. We won't have to wait to try out their most significant software update, however: Apple is releasing iOS 7 today for download on earlier devices. iPhone 4 and up, iPad 2 and up, and the most recent iPod touch models will support the software.
The most radical change for most users will be in terms of looks. iOS 7 will represent the most significant aesthetic upgrade of iOS since its launch back in 2007, changing most of the familiar icons and menus. It offers a brighter, more colourful design, and a first move away from Apple's controversial 'skeuomorphism': basically, this means the design will no longer strictly mimic 'real-world' objects.
Aside from the surface level makeover, some of iOS 7’s most notable features include significantly improved camera options, file-sharing app AirDrop and a new ‘control centre’ providing quick access some of the phone’s most important features. The former is accessible by swiping up from the bottom of the screen, and allows users to quickly manage settings like Wi-Fi while also providing shortcuts to features like the phone's camera.
As is always advised when it comes to significant software upgrades, it's recommended that people back up their device before updating in case there's any problems with the release. This can be done by plugging the phone into a computer and backing up through iTunes, or through the phone itself and iCloud (accessible via the main settings menu):
