The Drogheda Port Access Northern Cross Route is being officially unveiled today and motorists should be able to start using the new road on March 4th.
It will link the M1 motorway to the port and will support the development of up to 5,000 new homes in Drogheda.
Housing Infrastructure Services Company CEO Niall Morrissey said it will make life significantly easier for people travelling into the town.
“The new piece of road… gives a huge amount of access to people north of Drogheda coming in or going off to the M1,” he said.
“Particularly accessing the town [and] accessing the hospital.”
A growing town
Greater Drogheda is one of Ireland’s fastest growing settlements and has a population of some 67,000 people - in part due to its speedy transport links to the capital.
There have been calls for the town to be made a city and advocates say it would simplify governance.
"If Drogheda was listed as a city, we would have so many benefits to it," Drogheda City Status Group CEO Anna McKenna said.
"We would have our own administration, our own governance; at the moment we're governed by two county councils - one in Meath and one in Louth.
"We're falling between the two stools, and it's not helping us [in] any way.
"We can't make our own decisions regarding anything".
Greater Drogheda is Ireland’s sixth biggest settlement.
