A forensic search is underway at a Co Laois wood by gardaí investigating the disappearance of Fiona Pender.

She has not been seen since August of 1996 when she was seven months pregnant.

Ms Pender (25) went missing from her flat in Co Offaly.

A fresh cold case probe was launched by detectives last year and it is believed a breakthrough has led to the latest hunt.

The 18 year old missing persons inquiry was revived earlier this year, after a woman came forward with new information.

Chief Superintendent John Scanlon from Portlaoise garda station says Fiona's family are anxious to have her returned to them.
