A new process for the renewal of drivers licences in Ireland comes into effect from today.

The new service will see drivers having to travel to one of 34 National Driving Licence Service (NDLS) centres across the country as drivers are now required to apply for the licence in person. However, by early next year, there will be a facility where customers can apply for their licence by contacting NDLS Customer Service by phone, and providing supporting documents by post.

But this facility will only be available to those who have already completed the identity verification process during a face-to-face meeting.

An Post had applied to be considered as a place of renewal but their bid was unsuccessful. President of the Irish Postmasters Union Ciaran McEntee says the news system is going to cause a lot of inconvenience.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) says this new "layer of security" will make sure that the only person who uses your licence is the person entitled to do do, and that this will help to keep unlicensed, illegal drivers off the roads.

When applying for either a new or replacement learner permit or driver licence, you will need to visit one of the new National Driver Licence Service (NDLS) centres nationwide. This service is being transferred from the Local Authority Motor Tax Offices.

The location of NDLS centres around Ireland

The new National Driver Licence Service (NDLS) will have:

  • At least one centre in every county in Ireland – and you can apply for your licence in any one of the centres nationwide
  • Flexible opening times, including lunchtime opening and weekend opening hours
  • A security validation process for new customers which in most cases you will only need to do once, to make your learner permit or driving licence more secure and less susceptible to fraud

There will also be no increase in the cost of a driving licence or learner permit, with the cost of a 10-year licence staying at €55, a 3-year licence is €35 and a 1-year licence €25. The cost of a Learner Permit is €35.
