There are no plans for Deposit Return Scheme machines in Dublin Airport despite several shops there charging a deposit.

One passenger said they phoned the scheme's operator Re-turn to raise the issue and was advised to hold on to their bottle while on holiday and bring it to a Reverse Vending Machine when he returned home, the Irish Independent reports.

Airport operator DAA said Dublin Airport does not sell bottles or cans that are part of the scheme - but vendors who operate in the airport do.

"All vendors in the airport - and the airport itself - is fully compliant with the DRS (Deposit Return Scheme)," it said in a statement to Newstalk.

"Passengers can return their cans and bottles to WH Smith and Boots in the terminals," it added.

Dublin Airport Terminal 2. Dublin Airport Terminal 2.

Retail shops will be obliged by law to charge the deposit ranging from 15c to 25c from June 1st.

As part of the scheme they are also legally obliged to return it to customers in cash or vouchers.

However any such vouchers can only be spent in the shop the can or bottle was returned to.

'Three return points'

In a statement to Newstalk, Re-turn said return points in the airport are clearly indicated.

"There are currently three Deposit Return Points in Dublin Airport where consumers can return their drinks containers and get their deposits back," it said.

"All three are manual return points as opposed to Reverse Vending Machines and all three return points are airside, after the security checkpoints in the airport.

"There are two return points in Terminal 1 - located in WH Smith and Boots. There is one return point in Terminal Two - located in WH Smith.

"All deposit return points are required to display their Re-turn membership certificate in a prominent place in their store," it added.

Re-turn says over 74 million bottles and cans have been returned to shops and machines since the start of the scheme in February.

There are some 2,300 Reverse Vending Machines across the country.
