"Incredibly grateful"
Reacting to her nomination, Saoirse Ronan said: "To have been a part of a film like Lady Bird was a true privilege and I am incredibly grateful to the Academy for recognising this wonderful story about the beauty and strength of women.
"I am especially thrilled to share this moment with Laurie Metcalf and our leader and director Greta Gerwig, who, like Lady Bird, is an incredible woman and a dear friend."
Nora Twomey, director of 'The Breadwinner', spoke to Moncrieff shortly after the nominations were announced, explaining: "We knew that our film was up there for sure. But it was a bit of a strange year, because the rules had changed around the voting process and that.
"It was certainly not a sure thing by any stretch - but very welcome, as you can imagine."
Culture Minister Josepha Madigan was among those congratulating the nominees today.
She said: “I am delighted to see so much Irish interest with actors and filmmakers nominated for this year’s Academy Awards.
"In terms of its size, Ireland punches way above its weight in the quality of its audiovisual output."
