More will be done to help teachers find accomodation, Education Minister Norma Foley has said.

It comes amid complaints that some teachers are having to leave Dublin due to the high cost of renting.

There are also calls for an allowance for teachers who live in the capital owing to higher costs.

Minister Norma Foley told The Pat Kenny Show the Government will do more.

"I do accept that there are challenges around accommodation," she said.

"What we have done right throughout this Government, there have been cost of living measures introduced [such as] rental breaks [or] €2,000 for the Master's in Teaching.

"We've also introduced initiatives where people are free to rent out rooms in their homes with the tax break of €14,000.

"So more and more will be done in this space."

Dublin allowance

On the issue of a Dublin allowance for teachers, Minister Foley said any such measure would likely have to include other professions.

"I've always said that nothing is entirely off the table," she said.

"We look at everything going into a budgetary cycle but to be fair, I think anything that would be done - in terms of teachers or teaching staff - would perhaps have to be done across the board.

"Whether it's those in the nursing profession or An Garda Síochána or whatever the case might be.

"Everything is considered as we go into a budgetary cycle".

Minister Foley said teachers who move abroad can come back and be recognised in Irish classrooms.

"Any teacher who works abroad - if it's in the United Kingdom or right across Europe - they are accredited when they return in terms of their service.

"There is an issue if they are in non-EU countries, in terms of service being recognised, but we are currently looking at that to see what the potential is going forward."

Minister Foley added that there is also "a push and pull factor" involved in people who move abroad.
