At midday in France (11:00 GMT), crowds of people stood silently in public squares, schools, outside official buildings, and in businesses, observing a minute’s silence for the 12 people killed in the Charlie Hebdo attack.
After the minute ended, the bells of Paris’ Notre Dame cathedral rang out, while flags will fly at half-mast for three days, following instructions from president Francois Hollande.
Muslim leaders in France called upon their followers to also take part in honouring the victims of the “exceptional violence.”
The minute was observed in cities all over the world, mourning those killed and showing support for freedom of speech.
Journalists and media organisations, as well as government officials all over the world, have been paying tribute to the satirists of Charlie Hebdo, with many standing in solidarity by displaying the message Nous sommes Charlie [We are Charlie].
