The number of women at work has doubled since 1998, new CSO figures have confirmed.
The Central Statistics Office released these figures for International Women's Day, which takes place tomorrow.
It also showed the median weekly earnings of women increased by 32% in the past decade.
Business Post Columnist Ian Guider said it shows how important women are to the workforce.
“The number of women in the workplace over the past 20 years, the CSO say, 1.13 million women in work, up almost 700,000 in the space of 20 years,” he said.
“[This] reflects social changes, reflects demographic changes, reflects emigration into the country, but it is just a phenomenal increase.
“We wouldn't have, probably, the strength of the economy without more women in the workplace.”
