From Hello Kitty to dedicated cat cafés, many of Japanese residents are fascinated by cats, and make sure to treat them well. To tap into the lucrative market, a company called B&H Lifes has decided to release a  particularly odd luxury feline product: wine for cats.

According to Kotaku, the 399 yen (3 euro) product will initially be sold in a limited batch of 1,000 bottles. The product name Nyan Nyan Noveau references 'nyan nyan' (the Japanese phrase for a cat meowing) and Beaujolais Nouveau, a popular wine in the country. The drink is naturally grape-based, and contains Vitamin C and catnip.

Before you complain of animal cruelty, you can rest easy knowing the drink is not alcoholic - meaning this might be one bottle of wine immune to a certain 50c charge if and when Nyan Nyan Nouveau ever becomes available on the Emerald Isle.

It is not the first 'luxury' food or drink item produced specifically for cats: earlier this year, celebrity chef Simon Rimmer cooked up gourmet handmade meals for felines. The dishes included lobster sushi and caviar, and sold for around €30 each to help raise funds for the RSPCA.

B&H Lifes intend the wine to be used when their owners are celebrating birthdays, anniversarys and other special events. It's natural home, though, might be in the cat cafés that have proven a popular attraction for locals and visitors alike. You can get a tour of one of those establishments in the video below:
