President Obama's ended his holiday early to fly to Washington in an effort to reach a deal to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff. 

If Democrats and Republicans don't reach a compromise, tax increases and big spending cuts will come into effect on New Year's Day.

Many economists fear that could push the American economy back into recession.
