President Barack Obama has sent a formal resolution to the US Congress requesting its authorisation for a military strike against Syria.

A resolution seeks support for action to "deter, disrupt, prevent and degrade the potential for future uses of chemical weapons or other weapons of mass destruction".

The American President says he could act without the support of politicians - but believes it's important to have a debate.
