Fiona Doyle waived her right to anonymity so that her father Patrick O'Brien from Old Court Avenue, Bray, Co Wicklow could be named.

He pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to 16 charges of rape and indecent assault at Mackintosh Park, Pottery Road, Dun Laoghaire from 1973 to 1982.

Mr Justice Paul Carney suspended 9 years of a 12 year sentence but then granted bail to the 72 year old on the basis that it was a case fit for appeal.

The court heard the accused is in 'extremely poor health'.

Former presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter are among the guests at Barack Obama's ceremonial swearing-in to a second term.

The star studded event's underway in Washington DC in front of crowds of hundreds of thousands of people.

Celebrity guests include Beyonce, Jay-Z, Eva Longoria, Katy Perry, and John Mayer.

A 12 year old girl is in a critical condition after she was struck by a car in Knocknaheeny on Cork's north side. 

She was knocked down while she was crossing the Harbourview Road at about 4 o'clock this afternoon. 

The road between Courtown Drive and Knocknaheeny Avenue will be closed to traffic for a number of hours. 

Gardaí at Gurranabraher are appealing for witnesses.

The Europe Minister has condemned the insults and abuse which Taoiseach Enda Kenny said he was subjected to over his position on abortion.

Lucinda Creighton said the government was trying to conduct a rational and tolerant debate and said its not helpful when people engage in name calling.

Over the weekend the taoiseach Enda Kenny said he had been subject to personal abuse over his governments decision to introduce legislation for limited abortion.

Mr Kenny said some are branding him as being "worse than Herod".

This afternoon the Europe Minister Lucinda Creighton condemned the abuse.

Tributes are being paid to the film director and restaurant critic Michael Winner, who's died aged 77.

He made more than 30 films and was famous for his series of Death Wish films starring Charles Bronson.

Actor John Cleese says he was the "dearest, kindest, funniest and most generous of friends."

Restaurant critic Jay Rayner wrote on Twitter: "Winner made life more interesting."
