The Afghan President has welcomed the US's decision to extend its military presence there.

US President Barrack Obama says he will leave over 5,000 troops in Afghanistan when he leaves office in 2017.

Originally only a small embassy-based force were due to be there by the end of next year.

But the US military says more troops will be needed to help Afghan forces counter a growing Taliban threat.

NATO too has welcomed the decision.
