An attack against Israel last October was justified as it was 'part of the resistance against occupation', a Hamas spokesperson told Newstalk Breakfast.

The attack saw around 1,200 people killed by Hamas, while 240 were taken hostage.

Since then Israel has launched air and ground attacks on Gaza, killing at least 28,775 Palestinians.

The operation has seen Israel brought before the International Court of Justice in The Hague accused of genocide by South Africa.

Hamas spokesperson and former deputy foreign minister for the government in Gaza, Ghazi Hamad, told Newstalk Breakfast at least 200 people are being killed each day.

"The situation in Gaza since the beginning of this war [is] catastrophic," he said.

"I don't think there is no one word in the dictionary that could describe the atrocities and the brutal actions and the massacres and the slaughters in the Gaza Strip.

"Israel I think they open their eyes and put in their mind that they have to kill at least 200 [people] every day.

"Without reason, they kill 200 every day either from Khan Yunis or from Rafah, from Gaza, from everywhere.

"So I think now that there is continuous slaughters and massacres.

"What's happening in the south, I think Israel is trying to displace more people to Rafah which includes more than 1.3 million people.

"Now I think they are focusing in Nasser Hospital which is the biggest hospital in the south - they want to destroy it as they destroyed Shifa Hospital."

'Brutal policy'

Israel Defence Forces stormed Nasser Hospital in Gaza on Thursday, claiming it was being used by Hamas militants.

Mr Hamad rejected these claims as "ridiculous", and said he believes it is the "brutal policy" of Israel to destroy all hospitals in Gaza to prevent people from accessing medical treatment.

"I think they didn't succeed now to bring any proof," he said.

"They destroyed the biggest hospital in Gaza, Shifa Hospital, and they searched every centimetre there and they didn't find any proof.

"Now in Nasser they said that [there are] hostages there; I think they are lying and trying to cheat the world and to find any excuse to destroy all the installations in Gaza".

'Resistance against occupation'

Mr Hamad said he believes the October 7th attack was justified.

"I think the October 7th [attack] is part of the resistance against occupation," he said.

"No one can blame the Palestinians for what they did because we live under the occupation for 75 years.

"Torture, killing, blood, tears, and no one cared about the Palestinians.

"Now all the world opened their eyes and now asked Hamas, 'What did you do on October 7th?', and they didn't ask Israel before that, 'Why are you taking our lands, why are you killing our people?'

"I think October 7th created the new history and a new page.

"I think it is a time now that we send a strong message to the world: you have to give attention to the Palestinian dilemma".

Mr Hamad said Hamas wants the aggression to stop and a "complete ceasefire" with displaced people able to return to their homes.

He added that he believes Israel objected to a previous ceasefire proposal "because they want Gaza to be free for them to continue their military operation".

The UN human rights office OHCHR said on Thursday it was "deeply worried" over the raid on Nasser Hospital, which appeared to be "part of a pattern of attacks on civilian infrastructure, especially hospitals".

Tánaiste Micheál Martin has accused Israel of launching a misinformation campaign against UNRWA, the UN agency which helps Palestinian refugees.

A number of countries have paused funding the agency after Israeli allegations that staff members were involved in the Hamas attacks on October 7th.

The Tánaiste said he was "deeply concerned" that a number of key donors suspended their funding based on allegations "against a very small number of staff that have yet to be proven".

Irish funding for UNRWA of €20 million was announced yesterday.
