Meanwhile, senior Catholic clergy are preparing to bring their concerns over proposed abortion legislation directly to government ministers.

The Government plans to introduce a combination of legislation and regulation to deal with the issue of abortion where the life of the mother is in danger.

And the cross party Oireachtas Committee on Health will hear the views of a number of groups about the legislation in a series of public hearings between Tuesday and Thursday of this week.

A report will then be delivered before the end of the month.

Newstalk's Political Editor Shane COleman spoke to Chris and Norah on Newstalk Breakfast this morning about this story.

Meanwhile, a meeting's been scheduled for the end of next week which will discuss a number of issues, and the new laws and regulations are expected to be on the agenda.

The country's Catholic Archbishops reacted to the proposals drawn up before Christmas by saying they would 'pave the way for the direct and intentional killing of unborn children'.
