A cross-party delegation from the Oireachtas is to visit Ibrahim Halawa in jail during a four day visit to Egypt.
The group led by the Ceann Comhairle will travel to Egypt today for a series of meetings, where the case of the young Irish man who has been imprisoned there since August of 2013 will be discussed.
The group were invited by Dr Ali Abdel Aal, speaker of the House of Representatives of Egypt.
In a statement, the Oireachtas says the purpose of the visit is to discuss parliamentary relations and foster bilateral cooperation in the areas of foreign relations, communications, agriculture, trade, transport and tourism.
The Government has previously expressed "concern and frustration" as his trial was postponed for the 16th time in November.
The programme for the visit includes meetings with the Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sissi, the speaker of the Egyptian Parliament, the minister for trade and industry, among others.
The eight person Irish group will be in the Egyptian capital from today until the 13th.
Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl says it is an important trip, and indicated that the issue of Ibrahim Halawa will be raised at each of the planned meetings.
Darragh O'Brien (Fianna Fáil), Colm Brophy (Fine Gael), Brendan Howlin (Labour), Paul Murphy (AAA-PBP), Eoin Ó Broin (Sinn Féin), Eamon Ryan (Green Party) and Noel Grealish (Rural Independent Group) are the other six TDs making the trip.
